A free tool built to help South Africans make clearer financial decisions.
ClearCents is a free, independent savings and investment calculator built specifically for South Africans. There are no products to sell, no sign-up required, and no data stored. Just a straightforward tool that helps you see what your money can do over time.
The idea is simple. Most people understand that saving is important, but the numbers can feel abstract until you see them laid out clearly. How much will R1,000 a month grow to in 20 years? What difference does an extra 2% return make? What do you actually need to save monthly to reach R1 million? These are the kinds of questions ClearCents is built to answer quickly and honestly.
Most savings calculators in South Africa show you one scenario at a time. You enter your numbers, get a result, then have to go back and change things to compare. ClearCents shows three scenarios side by side so you can see the impact of different rates, contributions, or time horizons in a single view. That comparison is the core of what makes the tool useful.
South Africa has real and specific financial challenges. Inflation runs at 5% to 6% on average. Education costs inflate faster than that. Many South Africans don't have access to a financial adviser, or can't afford one for day-to-day decisions. ClearCents is built for exactly that gap — to give anyone with a phone or a laptop the ability to run their own numbers and arrive at a clearer picture.
All calculations use the effective annual rate method, which is the standard used by South African financial institutions. The monthly compounding rate is derived from the annual rate using the formula (1 + annual rate)^(1/12) - 1. Contributions are applied at the start of each month and the growth escalation is applied annually. This approach has been verified against the Sanlam Life compound interest calculator.
Results are for illustrative purposes only. They are not a guarantee of future returns and should not be treated as financial advice. For any significant financial decision, we encourage you to speak to a registered financial adviser.
Alongside the calculator, ClearCents publishes plain-English guides on topics that matter to South African savers — how compound interest works, what the tax-free savings account rules mean for you, and how to think about saving for a child's education. These guides are designed to be genuinely useful, not just filler.
ClearCents will always be free to use. We are not a financial services provider and we do not offer investment products, manage money, or provide personalised financial advice. The site exists to educate and inform, and to give South Africans a clearer picture of what their savings can grow to.
